I. TFT: The Pixel Commander Behind the Screen

TFT, short for Thin-Film Transistor, does not refer to a specific screen type. Instead, it is the core component underlying the control system of modern displays.

Behind every so-called TFT screen lies a precise array consisting of millions to tens of millions of micro-sized thin-film transistors, neatly arranged on the glass substrate. Each TFT independently controls the brightness and color performance of one pixel.

Industry analysts have vividly described it: if each pixel on the screen is compared to a window, the TFT acts as an intelligent switch controlling the opening and closing of this window. It precisely adjusts the light flux from the backlight, thereby presenting delicate images.

II. Working Principle of TFT: From Passive to Active

The core value of TFT lies in realizing active matrix addressing, which has completely transformed the control logic of early passive matrix displays.

In the passive matrix era, pixel control relied on simple row-column cross signals, which were prone to crosstalk, motion blur and other issues, with limited response speed.

TFT technology, however, equips each pixel with an exclusive micro-switch, enabling independent signal addressing and signal retention. This delivers three remarkable advantages: more accurate image control, faster dynamic response, and lower overall power consumption.

This technological leap has laid the foundation for high-resolution and high-refresh-rate displays.

III. Application Scope of TFT: More Than LCD

Although TFT-LCD is the most well-known application at present, TFT technology serves far broader purposes. TFT itself does not emit light or display colors; it is an underlying control architecture.

Even for widely used OLED displays today, large-size and high-resolution products still rely on TFT arrays as backplane circuits to achieve precise pixel driving.

IV. Continuous Evolution and Upgrading of TFT Materials

TFT display technology is also constantly evolving, and the iteration of its semiconductor materials directly drives improvements in screen performance.

From early amorphous silicon, to high-performance low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS), and further to oxide semiconductors (such as IGZO) that balance cost and performance, every upgrade in TFT materials has advanced TFT screens in terms of resolution, refresh rate and energy efficiency.

As one of the fundamental technologies of the modern display industry, TFT converts disordered electrical signals into orderly, pixel-precise image control.

It is the silent collaboration of these millions of micro-switches under the glass substrate that creates the clear, vivid and smooth digital visual experience we enjoy today.

Amid the continuous evolution of display technologies, TFT remains an indispensable and pivotal role.
